nanoCUL – the radio module for sending and receiving various 433 MHz protocols for your "smart house", for example on a CCU base or a Raspberry Pi on which FHEM or openHAB is installed.
We use an industrially manufactured board, which you assemble with a level converter for professional connection of the CC1101 radio module (no overload due to overvoltage), a pullup resistor for reception enhancement and a control board in sandwich design corresponding to the Arduino Nano v3.
Reach your goal quickly
This kit provides you with all components to build a radio module on your own. An illustrated 11-page manual guides you through the necessary construction steps. What else do you need? A soldering iron, DIY fun and a heat gun – or you can choose the 3D printed housing instead of the heat shrink tubing.
All necessary configuration steps for setup in FHEM, OpenHAB or at the CCU base can be found in our 19-page setup PDF, which will be sent to you by mail after purchase.
What can we do better?
- Illustrated PDF instructions for assembly and setting up
- Polygon design 3D printing enclosure on request
- The best possible range with the right antenna
- Stable industrially manufactured circuit boards against breaking off the antenna
- Free choice of firmware with Arduino Nano compatible control board
- Service, service, service
Available options
You have the option to get the CUL with an FTDI chip with unique internal serial number. If you can do without that, choose the CH340G variant and save money. You still have the option to run multiple CULs on your Raspberry Pi. The CULs can be easily distinguished by the USB port number. However, for operation on a CCU1 the FTDI chip is mandatory - from CCU2 the driver for the CH340G is included.
The choice of antenna depends on the structural conditions. Due to reflections in the building, the arrangement of the receivers, the type of walls and other sources of interference, it is impossible to make blanket statements or even specify ranges. Empirical values indicate that the mini antenna (Lambda/4 antenna) is sufficient for apartments. In single-family houses, a concrete ceiling can often be overcome, but interference may already occur here, and a higher-quality antenna should be used.
Alignment and positioning have more influence on radio operation than the length of the antenna. However, since it is not always possible to place the antenna at the best possible position in the house, you can help with a better antenna. You have the choice between a compact angled antenna and the large rod antenna with connection cable and magnetic base for easier alignment.
For the following diagram, the antennas were to receive the signal of an IT radio remote control under the same, exemplary conditions. The antenna was aligned axially and radially to the remote control. Three measurements were performed in each case and the mean value of the RSSI (indicator for the received field strength) was formed.
Average RSSI for reception of 433MHz signal, the closer the value to zero, the better.
In our store you will find different USB cables here.
You can connect the radio module directly to the Raspberry Pi with the adapter, or use a cable to allow more freedom in the orientation of the antenna.
We offer a high quality 3D printed plastic housing in modern polygon design. The housing is printed in black PETG and a layer thickness of 0.15mm. It was developed especially for this kit and therefore fits exactly to the millimeter. The frequency of the CUL is printed in the lid.
Alternatively, you can obtain a transparent heat shrinkable tubing that is shrunk on with a hot air stream of approx. 100°C.
